Publix had the lowest price for Propecia in a study published Friday in the Journal of the American Medical Association. That's despite the fact that the drug is not FDA-approved.
That means the price for Propecia, which was the first FDA-approved drug to treat male pattern baldness, was about $1,300 for a supply of 30 tablets. That's a savings of about $2,500 a month.
The price for generic finasteride, the active ingredient in Propecia, was about $1,300 for a supply of 30 tablets. That's a savings of about $1,700 a month.
Publix, the chain of brick-and-mortar pharmacies that makes finasteride, posted the lowest price for the drug in a study published Friday in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
The study, led by researchers at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, examined data on 1,849 patients who had both conditions and were being treated with finasteride. The patients were randomly assigned to take either a placebo or a drug known as 5-alpha reductase inhibitors, which are taken orally, either daily or every day.
A separate study on 1,049 men with a 5-alpha reductase deficiency showed that taking finasteride for two years produced a mean reduction of about 10 percent. The drug was also well tolerated, but the drug's effectiveness was not established.
The results were mixed, with some studies showing improvement of 1 percent or less and some showing improvement of less than 5 percent. In the latest study, published in the journal, the drug was not associated with a decrease in hair loss.
That means the price for Propecia was a little less than the price for generic finasteride, which is only FDA-approved to treat male pattern baldness.
Publix, which makes finasteride, was also the lowest price for Propecia for the first time since the study began in 1997. That's because the drug's active ingredient, finasteride, is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor, meaning it blocks the enzyme 5 alpha-reductase, which converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
Publix also posted a slightly higher price for Propecia than for generic finasteride, with the price per pill going from $13.77 to $49.94. The generic drug was about $2,100 less expensive than the branded drug.
Publix, which sells only generic finasteride, is one of the few online pharmacies that sells only branded finasteride. That means that its prices for Propecia are lower than those for generic finasteride, and its price for the drug has increased.
In addition to the cost of a supply of Propecia, Publix said Friday that it had a price for the generic drug in the range of $3.99 to $20.04 per pill. That's a savings of about $300 a month.
Publix also posted a lower price for Propecia in the same market. It posted a price per pill of about $2.00, and its price was still well below the branded version, with a price per pill of about $1.50.
The drug is not currently approved for the treatment of hair loss, although other pharmaceutical companies are seeking FDA approval to market it as an oral medication.
